A critical step in the healing process is self-care. After a breathwork or reiki session, it is imperative to listen to your body. Self-love and honoring the way you feel helps integrate the experience and yields more positive results. Here are five ways to show yourself some love after a session:
1. Drink water: On a normal day, you should be drinking at least half of your body weight in clean, fresh water. However, after a session, you may find yourself very thirsty because of the detoxifying properties your session may have had on your body. Water will help facilitate the flushing of energy and toxins that no longer serve you. In a hydrated body, your energy moves more freely; therefore, it is a good practice to abstain from caffeine for at least the day of your session.
2. Journal: Journaling the details of your experience after each session allows you to process the emotions and feelings that bubbled up to the surface. This helps you to acknowledge these feelings which may bring more clarity for a solution.
3. Eat: Because breathwork speeds up your metabolism, you will burn more calories than usual. The longer the session, the more calories burned. Thus, you may need to eat more than usual after a session. By feeding your hunger with healthy, colorful, and mindful foods, you will honor your body’s needs.
4. Epson Salt Bath: If negative emotions or feelings of fear, anger, shame, sadness, etc. were revealed in your session, you will want to take a salt bath that same evening. This will continue to detoxify the body of those emotions and feelings. I personally sit in the bathtub as long as possible, sometimes up to one hour, after an intense breathwork practice. Also placing the intention of the water washing away what no longer serves you, is an excellent way to prepare the body for a good night’s rest.
5. Solitude: Being one with yourself, may be just what you need to process and to integrate the experience. It invites you to reflect and connect with the messages delivered during your session, so you can determine the next steps of your journey.
Following your inner guidance will always lead you to your highest good so listen to your intuition and be gentle with yourself. It is helpful to note that messages may continue to come through or feeling/emotions may emerge over the next few days, so be mindful of the above list and continue self-care until you feel rested and revived!
